US IT firm Cognizant to buy Astreya for $600m

On April 29, US IT services company Cognizant said it had agreed to buy Astreya for about US$600 million as it expands its AI infrastructure business.

Astreya is an IT services provider focused on AI infrastructure and data center services.

The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2026, pending regulatory approvals amid rising corporate spending on AI and cloud migration.

Founded in 2001, Astreya has spent nearly a decade managing data center infrastructure and AI lab environments for six of the Magnificent Seven tech firms.

The acquisition follows Cognizant’s January purchase of 3Cloud and its 2024 buyout of Belcan for nearly US$1.3 billion.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Astreya’s value tracks the wider AI infrastructure spending cycle

  • The “Magnificent Seven” are seven of the largest US tech companies set to spend more than US$680 billion on capital expenditures, mostly on AI infrastructure like data centers, chips plus networking gear 1.
  • That spending lifts demand for companies that design, deploy, and run high-performance data centers and networks for large organizations 2.
  • For Cognizant, the purchase gives it a foothold in this expensive part of the tech market.
  • Astreya was also growing through deals. In February 2026, it signed a definitive agreement to buy Reliant Information Services, LLC from Reliant Group to widen its work in heavily regulated sectors including airlines 3.

The purchase marks a move from labor-heavy services to AI-led operations

  • Cognizant has about 351,600 employees and leans on a global delivery model with much of its workforce in India. That leaves it under pressure to move past using lower-cost workers in offshore locations 4.
  • The purchase also brings Astreya’s “AI OpsHub,” a platform announced in April 2026 as a central system for managing hybrid IT environments that mix on-premises systems with cloud technology 5.
  • Astreya has launched AI products with specialized software agents on the ServiceNow Store, which is ServiceNow’s app marketplace 6. It has listed products on the Databricks Marketplace too, a marketplace from data and AI software company Databricks 6.
  • That puts more weight on software Astreya owns. Across the sector, large IT consulting firms are buying specialized AI and automation companies to stay competitive, with a shift toward intelligent systems.
