US imposes 26% tariff on Indian imports to push trade deal
The US government has imposed a 26% tariff on Indian imports, one of the highest among major trading partners.
This follows tariffs of 20% on the EU, 24% on Japan, 25% on South Korea, and at least 54% on many Chinese goods.
Despite personal ties between President Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump justified the decision by claiming India charges the US unfair tariffs.
He cited a 52% rate on certain US goods during a White House press event.
The tariff hike aims to pressure India into a trade agreement.
