The US government will reveal the findings of a national security investigation into semiconductor imports in two weeks, according to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

This probe, initiated under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, assesses whether reliance on foreign semiconductor imports poses a national security risk.

The announcement follows a recent meeting between President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, where they introduced a new trade framework.

This framework includes a 15% tariff on European Union imports to the US and a separate 25% tariff on automobiles.

President Trump noted that the potential for tariffs on semiconductors has encouraged companies, including those from Taiwan, to explore the establishment of manufacturing facilities in the United States.

The US relies heavily on Taiwan for chip imports. This situation has been a focus for previous administrations, including President Joe Biden’s, who have aimed to address it by promoting domestic chip production through initiatives like the Chips Act.

The Trump administration has previously conducted investigations under Section 232, which have included imports of pharmaceuticals, copper, and lumber.

These investigations have led to tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles since Trump took office in January.

The semiconductor investigation may similarly lead to new tariffs in this sector.
