The US Department of Defense (DoD) announced on July 14, 2025, that it has awarded contracts worth up to US$200 million to several AI companies, including Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and xAI.

The contracts are intended to accelerate the adoption of advanced AI capabilities to address national security challenges.

The selected companies will develop AI systems for various mission areas.

Doug Matty, the DoD’s chief digital and AI officer, said that AI adoption enhances the agency’s ability to support military personnel and maintain a strategic advantage.

Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, has introduced “Grok for Government,” a suite of AI tools available to US government agencies through the General Services Administration (GSA).

This comes after the launch of an updated version of its Grok chatbot.

OpenAI, which received a US$200 million contract from the DoD in 2024, has launched “OpenAI for Government,” providing AI tools for government workers at federal, state, and local levels.
