US government awards up to $200m AI work to Anthropic, OpenAI
The US Department of Defense (DoD) announced on July 14, 2025, that it has awarded contracts worth up to US$200 million to several AI companies, including Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and xAI.
The contracts are intended to accelerate the adoption of advanced AI capabilities to address national security challenges.
The selected companies will develop AI systems for various mission areas.
Doug Matty, the DoD’s chief digital and AI officer, said that AI adoption enhances the agency’s ability to support military personnel and maintain a strategic advantage.
Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, has introduced “Grok for Government,” a suite of AI tools available to US government agencies through the General Services Administration (GSA).
This comes after the launch of an updated version of its Grok chatbot.
OpenAI, which received a US$200 million contract from the DoD in 2024, has launched “OpenAI for Government,” providing AI tools for government workers at federal, state, and local levels.
These contracts represent the DoD’s latest efforts to integrate AI technologies into its operations.

1️⃣ Pentagon’s AI spending surge reveals strategic tech priority shift
The Pentagon’s $200 million contracts to Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and xAI represent just a fraction of rapidly accelerating defense AI investments.
The Department of Defense has spent approximately $670 million on AI projects since the launch of ChatGPT, marking a 20% increase from previous years 1.
With 83 active contracts for generative AI projects already in place, total DoD spending on AI could exceed $1 billion in the near future 1.
This acceleration follows a pattern of increasing investments, with companies like Booz Allen Hamilton seeing their government AI contract obligations more than double from $252 million in FY 2021 to $538 million in FY 2023 2.
These investments reflect the Pentagon’s strategic prioritization of AI as essential infrastructure rather than experimental technology, with Dr. Doug Matty explicitly stating that AI adoption is “transforming the Department’s ability to support our warfighters and maintain strategic advantage” 3.
