US fintech firm Fiserv reports Q1 revenue drop, shares decline
United States fintech and payments company Fiserv reported lower-than-expected first-quarter revenue on April 24, 2025.
The Wisconsin-based payment processing firm’s shares fell approximately 7% in premarket trading following the announcement.
The company recorded adjusted revenue of US$4.79 billion, missing analysts’ expectations of US$4.84 billion, according to LSEG data.
This shortfall was partly due to decreased demand in its payments processing unit.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Inflation concerns are reshaping consumer payment behaviors
Fiserv’s revenue miss reflects broader spending pattern shifts occurring across the US economy amid inflation concerns and economic uncertainty.
Despite 46% of consumers feeling optimistic about the economy in Q1 2025, spending intentions decreased across discretionary categories as 50% of consumers cited inflation as their top financial concern 1.
This consumer pullback is particularly evident in the 9% decline in Fiserv’s payment processing revenue, aligning with research showing 75% of consumers actively seeking cheaper alternatives for purchases 1.
The contrast between slowing transaction volumes and Fiserv’s overall 5.3% growth in merchant solutions revenue demonstrates how consumers are becoming more selective rather than reducing spending entirely, prioritizing necessities over discretionary purchases.
Personal consumption expenditures grew by only 0.4% in February 2025 according to government data, reflecting this cautious consumer approach that directly impacts payment processors 2.
2️⃣ Payment processors face competing market forces amid industry transformation
Fiserv’s mixed earnings results reflect the complex operating environment for payment processors who must navigate contradictory market trends.
The payment processing market continues growing at a projected CAGR of 10.5% through 2032 3, yet established players face headwinds from changing consumer behaviors, with online shopping frequency declining 15% compared to previous periods 4.
The decline in processing revenue despite overall growth suggests Fiserv is experiencing the industry-wide shift toward new payment methods, as 24% of consumers now use mobile payment systems instead of traditional payment processing 5.
