US fintech firm Candescent expands in India, hits 1,000 staff

US fintech Candescent is expanding in India to Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Bengaluru after raising its India headcount to 1,000 from about 600 a year ago, COO John Garvey said.

The company was spun out of NCR Voyix in 2024 and was last valued at US$2.4 billion that year.

The company said its platforms are used by about 1,300 financial institutions, mostly in the US.

India now houses about two-thirds of its engineering team and 80% of its designers.

Garvey said Candescent uses AI tools such as Cursor to write around 80% of its code. He added that a 20% headcount increase over the next year would not be surprising.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Candescent’s position in US community and regional banking

  • Candescent powers the top three U.S. mobile banking apps and serves more than 30 million users through more than 1,300 bank and credit union clients 1.
  • The company spun out of NCR Voyix in 2024. It is backed by Veritas Capital, a private equity firm, plus Canapi Ventures, a venture capital firm focused on financial technology startups 1.
  • Its platform is described as a modern, application programming interface-first system. This means banks and credit unions can plug custom-built or third-party software into its digital banking services with less friction 1.

India’s role is expanding beyond support, aided by AI tools

  • Garvey said India houses about two-thirds of Candescent’s engineering team and 80% of its designers. That footprint puts India at the center of product development 1.
  • Candescent’s move into Hyderabad comes as the city draws other AI and data firms. Tredence, a data analytics and AI services company, opened a 20,000-square-foot delivery and innovation center there and plans to grow its workforce in Telangana to more than 2,200 by 2027 2.
