US EV startup Arc wins $160m deal for hybrid tugboats

Arc, a Los Angeles-based EV startup founded in 2021, has secured a US$160 million contract to supply eight hybrid-electric tugboats to Curtin Maritime.

Each ship-assist tug is priced at around US$20 million, with delivery expected by 2027.

The vessels will be built in partnership with Snow & Co. shipyard for use around the Los Angeles port.

The hybrid tugs will primarily use electric propulsion powered by a 6 MWh battery, with a smaller diesel generator for longer missions.

Standard tugboats in this category are typically powered by large diesel engines, which contribute significantly to local emissions.
