US data center firm Vantage gets $1.6b to grow its APAC capacity
Vantage Data Centers has secured a US$1.6 billion investment to expand its Asia-Pacific (APAC) operations, with funding led by affiliates of GIC and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.
The funding will support its acquisition of a hyperscale data center campus in Johor, Malaysia, from Yondr Group.
The Johor campus, located in Sedenak Tech Park, will deliver over 300MW of IT capacity across three data centers and be operated as JHB1.
Vantage said the deal, expected to close in Q4 2025, will lift its total Asia-Pacific capacity to 1GW across Australia, Malaysia, Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
AI demand drives unprecedented investment scale in APAC data centers
- Vantage’s $1.6 billion investment represents just a fraction of the massive capital flowing into Asia-Pacific data centers, where the region leads globally with $15.5 billion in investment, accounting for 70% of cross-border flows 2.
- The timing aligns with explosive growth projections, as the Asia-Pacific data center market is expected to grow from $31.89 billion in 2023 to $77.29 billion by 2030, representing a 13.5% compound annual growth rate 3.
- This growth is directly tied to AI infrastructure needs, with 72% of organizations in the region linking their data location strategy to AI plans, while 64% of IT leaders cite lack of storage capacity for massive AI datasets as a significant challenge 4.
- The scale of expansion is evident in the pipeline: Asia Pacific added nearly 2,300 MW to its development pipeline in the first half of 2025 alone, with total operational capacity around 12.7 GW 5.
Singapore spillover strategy emerges as key growth pattern for Southeast Asian data centers
- Vantage’s acquisition in Johor demonstrates a deliberate strategy to capture Singapore’s overflow demand, as the campus is strategically positioned in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone with direct dark fiber connectivity 1.
- This approach leverages Singapore’s connectivity advantages while accessing Malaysia’s lower land and operating costs, plus government incentives that make Johor well-positioned to support the region’s growing digital infrastructure needs 1.
- The pattern reflects broader regional dynamics, as hyperscalers expanding infrastructure struggle to keep pace with demand, leading to increased reliance on third-party developers in strategic locations 6.
- The 300MW+ Johor campus represents one of Southeast Asia’s largest hyperscale facilities, bringing Vantage’s total APAC capacity to 1GW across Australia, Malaysia, Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong 1.
