US crypto firm Gemini plans $316.7m IPO

Gemini Space Station, a New York-based crypto-exchange and custodian led by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, plans to raise up to US$316.7 million in a US IPO.

The company will offer 16.7 million shares at US$17 to US$19 each, which could give Gemini a valuation of around US$2.2 billion at the top end.

Gemini is the latest cryptocurrency firm pursuing a US listing, following public offerings from Circle Internet Group and Bullish earlier this year.

Goldman Sachs and Citigroup are leading the IPO, and Gemini plans to trade on Nasdaq under the symbol GEMI.

Founded in 2014, Gemini reported having over US$18 billion in assets on its platform in its recent filing.

The company posted a net loss of US$282.5 million on US$68.6 million in revenue for the first half of 2025, compared to a US$41.4 million loss on US$74.3 million in revenue a year earlier.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Revenue growth doesn’t guarantee profitability in competitive crypto exchanges

Gemini’s financial trajectory reveals the scaling challenges facing crypto exchanges despite growing market adoption.

While the company’s revenue increased from $98.1 million in 2023 to $142.2 million in 2024, its losses actually worsened significantly—from $41.4 million to $282.5 million in the first six months when comparing year-over-year periods 12.

This deteriorating profitability despite revenue growth highlights how crypto exchanges face mounting operational costs, legal expenses, and competitive pressures that can outpace revenue gains.

The trend suggests that simply capturing more trading volume doesn’t automatically translate to better unit economics, particularly when exchanges must invest heavily in compliance, technology infrastructure, and legal defenses.

2️⃣ Strategic timing leverages favorable crypto market momentum

Gemini’s IPO timing capitalizes on a surge in crypto market activity and investor appetite for regulated exchange platforms.

Recent crypto IPOs have delivered notable returns—Circle surged 168% on its first trading day after raising $1.2 billion, while Bullish climbed 84% following its $1.1 billion raise 1.
