US crypto firm Gemini files for Nasdaq IPO

Gemini Space Station, a New York-based cryptocurrency exchange and custodian founded by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, has filed to go public on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker GEMI.

Founded in 2014, Gemini offers cryptocurrency trading, a US dollar-backed stablecoin, and a cryptocurrency rewards credit card.

The company reported a net loss of US$158.5 million on US$142.2 million in revenue for 2024.

Net losses rose to US$282.5 million on US$67.9 million in revenue for the first half of 2025.

Gemini is joining other cryptocurrency firms in public listings amid a more favorable US regulatory climate.

Recent cryptocurrency IPOs include Circle Internet Group, which raised US$1.2 billion in June, and Bullish, which raised US$1.1 billion earlier this month.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Operational challenges compound beyond typical market headwinds

Gemini’s financial trajectory reveals deteriorating fundamentals that extend beyond standard market pressures affecting the crypto industry.

In the first half of 2025, the company’s losses exploded to $282.5 million compared to $41.4 million in the same period of 2024—a nearly 600% increase—while revenue actually declined from $73.5 million to $67.9 million1.

This suggests significant operational challenges, as companies typically see losses increase alongside revenue growth during expansion phases, not during revenue contraction.

The magnitude of loss expansion relative to the modest revenue decline indicates that Gemini’s cost structure may not be scaling appropriately with business volumes.

Legal disputes, including issues with the Gemini Earn program, have likely contributed additional costs and regulatory complications beyond normal market volatility1.

2️⃣ IPO timing creates stark performance contrast within crypto sector

Gemini’s public offering comes amid a wave of successful crypto IPOs, but its financial profile differs dramatically from recent market successes.
