US crypto ATM firm CoinFlip said to explore sale

CoinFlip, a bitcoin ATM operator based in Chicago, is reportedly exploring a potential sale.

The company is working with a financial adviser and considering a valuation of at least US$1 billion.

Discussions are in the early stages, and there is no guarantee a deal will happen. CoinFlip has not commented publicly.

Founded in 2015, CoinFlip operates over 5,500 cryptocurrency ATMs across the US, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

The company raised seed funding in 2018 with support from investors like Shoreline Venture Management and JetBlue Technology Ventures.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Crypto ATM industry faces regulatory headwinds amid growth

CoinFlip’s potential sale comes at a pivotal moment for the crypto ATM sector, which is experiencing heightened regulatory scrutiny despite significant growth.

The industry has expanded rapidly with CoinFlip alone operating over 5,500 ATMs across multiple countries including the US, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa 1.

However, lawmakers are increasingly targeting these machines due to fraud concerns, with Americans losing $180 million to crypto ATM scams in 2023 alone 2.

Recent legislation, including the proposed Crypto ATM Fraud Prevention Act, aims to limit new users to $2,000 per day and $10,000 over 14 days while mandating verbal confirmation for transactions over $500 3.

Research shows that illicit activity at crypto ATMs is double that of the overall crypto industry, with 1.2% of cash-to-crypto volume linked to illegal transactions 4.

These regulatory challenges may be influencing CoinFlip’s decision to explore a sale, as compliance costs rise and potential growth becomes more constrained.

2️⃣ Crypto M&A activity accelerates amid market recovery

CoinFlip’s exploration of a potential $1 billion sale reflects a broader surge in cryptocurrency mergers and acquisitions during 2025, fueled by Bitcoin’s price rally and industry maturation.
