US court ruling lets mobile games avoid Apple fees

A recent US court ruling may significantly benefit mobile-game developers by allowing them to bypass Apple’s App Store rules.

The decision, from the Epic Games vs. Apple case, requires Apple to let developers sell outside its platform and avoid commission fees of 15% to 30%.

Industry analysts estimate US$4.1 billion in revenue could shift from Apple to the top 25 mobile-game publishers this year, with a total of US$19.5 billion over the next few years.

The ruling is expected to reduce commissions paid by developers to app stores by about one-third.

Some developers are already directing users to alternative payment systems to keep more revenue.

Payment processors like Xsolla and Stash could also benefit by offering developers lower fees through direct-to-consumer web stores, potentially reshaping mobile-gaming economics.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Epic’s years-long legal crusade reshapes mobile economics

The recent ruling against Apple represents the culmination of a strategic legal battle initiated years ago by Epic Games, not just a sudden judicial decision.

When Fortnite was removed from the App Store in 2020 for bypassing Apple’s payment system, Epic launched its lawsuit claiming the 30% commission was anti-competitive1.

This court decision follows years of coordinated challenges across multiple jurisdictions, showing how Epic CEO Tim Sweeney’s public stance that this battle was about “better conditions for all developers” is now materializing into industry-wide benefits1.

The projected $19.5 billion revenue shift from app stores to developers over the coming years demonstrates the massive financial stakes that motivated this lengthy legal confrontation.

This ruling represents one of the most significant challenges to platform economics in the mobile era, potentially affecting how all digital marketplaces operate in the future.

2️⃣ Mobile monetization landscape poised for creative disruption

The mobile gaming industry was already experiencing monetization evolution before this ruling, with in-app purchases generating $80.9 billion in 2024 and hybrid monetization strategies adopted by 72% of developers2.
