US connectivity firm Amphenol nears $10.5b deal for data unit

Amphenol is close to acquiring CommScope’s broadband connectivity unit in a deal valued at about US$10.5 billion including debt.

The deal could be completed as early as August 4, and would be Amphenol’s largest acquisition so far.

Amphenol, based in Connecticut, designs fiber-optic connectors, antennas, and specialty cables for data centers.

CommScope’s broadband connectivity segment, known as CCS, provides connectivity products for data centers and network infrastructure.

CommScope has been considering the sale as part of its effort to reduce debt.

Last year, Amphenol agreed to buy CommScope’s mobile-network businesses for US$2.1 billion.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Telecom infrastructure deals are driving a massive M&A surge this year

Amphenol’s potential $10.5 billion CommScope acquisition fits into a broader pattern of growth in telecom deals during 2024.

Telecom M&A deal values surged by 162% in the first half of 2024, with infrastructure deals representing $22 billion out of $43 billion in total technology, media, and telecom transactions1.

This infrastructure focus reflects companies positioning themselves for AI-driven data center expansion, as network connectivity becomes increasingly critical for handling computational workloads.

The timing suggests that Amphenol is capitalizing on a market moment where telecom infrastructure assets are highly valued, potentially securing CommScope’s broadband connectivity business before competition intensifies further.

2️⃣ This acquisition represents a dramatic scale-up of Amphenol’s deal-making strategy

The $10.5 billion CommScope broadband deal would be five times larger than Amphenol’s previous biggest acquisition, signaling a major shift in the company’s growth ambitions.

Amphenol paid $2.1 billion for CommScope’s mobile-network businesses just last year, but this new deal dwarfs that transaction[Original article].
