US Commerce Dept curbs chip tool shipments to Hua Hong
The US Commerce Department told several chip equipment makers to stop shipping some tools and materials to Hua Hong after officials concluded the Chinese chipmaker could use the sites to make advanced chips.
The order also covers Huali in Shanghai, which is Hua Hong’s contract manufacturing unit.
Lam Research, Applied Materials, and KLA were among the suppliers believed to have received letters.
Reuters previously reported that Huali was preparing a 7-nanometer process. The curbs could cost suppliers billions of dollars and add friction ahead of a planned Trump-Xi meeting in May.
