US Chamber Korea partners with fuel cell firm on AI data centers

The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Korea has signed an agreement with Bloom Energy to promote distributed power solutions for AI data centers in South Korea.

Bloom Energy, based in California, develops distributed power systems using solid oxide fuel cell technology.

The partnership aims to expand the use of Bloom Energy’s fuel cell-based systems in Korea, addressing the growing demand for reliable and sustainable energy infrastructure for AI data centers.

AmCham said the collaboration could support Korea’s efforts to improve energy security and reduce carbon emissions.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Will Korean AI data centers commit to fuel cells at scale

  • American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AmCham) and Bloom Energy announced a deal. It lists zero committed megawatts, missing timelines, and unnamed Korean AI data center buyers
  • Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) runs a centralized grid with 1 to 4 year waits for connections over 5 MW, and mandates 20% on-site generation by 2040 1
  • Over 250,000 NVIDIA units are deployed or planned across sovereign cloud programs, while fuel cell power plans remain vague 2
  • Bloom’s 2018 Bundang plant was 8.35 MW and sold power to homes, businesses, not data centers 3. It later set a Korea distribution deal with SK Ecoplant, an engineering and construction affiliate of SK Group. The sources list no Korean AI data center buyers 4

Energy-as-a-service firms can package SOFC for Korea’s AI

  • Energy-as-a-service providers own, operate energy assets, then sell power or uptime rather than equipment. Microgrid integrators can bundle Bloom solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) units with batteries for AI sites. Brookfield Asset Management set a $5 billion program to deploy Bloom fuel cells 4
  • Targets include SK Telecom’s 1 GW Ulsan expansion and Fir Hills or Stock Farm Road, led by Brian Koo from the LG Electronics founding family, which could reach 3 GW by 2028 56. Samsung SDS and the National AI Computing Center plan 50,000 GPUs by 2030 7
  • Act on project schedules, procurement status, and who decides at each site, then pitch SOFC battery hybrids as the quickest path to Korea’s 20% on-site rule 1
