US-based multimodal startup Fal.ai said to raise at $4b valuation
Fal.ai, a startup that hosts AI models for image, video, and audio, has raised about US$250 million in a new funding round, according to sources familiar with the deal.
The round values the San Francisco-headquartered company at over US$4 billion and includes Kleiner Perkins and Sequoia as major investors, the sources said.
This comes less than three months after Fal.ai announced US$125 million in series C funding at a US$1.5 billion valuation led by Meritech.
At the time, Todd Jackson shared that the company’s revenue crossed US$95 million and its platform was used by over 2 million developers, up from US$10 million in annual recurring revenue and 500,000 developers a year earlier, according to TechCrunch.
Fal.ai was founded in 2021 by Burkay Gur and Gorkem Yurtseven.
Its platform provides over 600 AI models for developers and serves clients ranging from individuals to companies like Adobe, Canva, Perplexity, and Shopify.
Fal.ai has previously raised nearly US$200 million from investors including Bessemer Venture Partners and Andreessen Horowitz.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Fal’s 167% valuation jump signals a GPU capacity bet
- Fal’s valuation rose from $1.5 billion to over $4 billion in under three months 1. Investors weigh infrastructure capacity plus revenue, with sales at Series C above $95 million 1.
- Fal runs thousands of Nvidia H100 and H200 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) tuned for fast inference (running models to generate outputs) 1. That hardware access likely helps the premium valuation.
- First Round’s Todd Jackson says media and multimodal focus set it apart 1. Reports do not say if Fal owns GPUs or relies on leases or partners. That detail shapes any long-run edge versus hyperscalers (the largest public cloud providers, such as Microsoft and Google).
Third-party routing for AI inference may rise with multimodal demand
- Demand for multimodal AI, especially video, is climbing with apps like Sora 1. That shift exposes gaps in performance and pricing across providers.
- AI teams and infrastructure startups see fast growth in image, video and audio inference, with Fal’s platform used by over two million developers at its Series C 1. That creates room for tools that track costs across providers and route jobs in real time.
- These tools could help developers shift inference requests across providers such as Fal, CoreWeave, and hyperscalers based on price plus latency.
