US autonomous truck startup Pronto.ai buys rival SafeAI
San Francisco-based autonomous vehicle startup Pronto.ai has acquired rival SafeAI, a company specializing in off-road autonomous systems for construction and mining vehicles.
While terms were not disclosed, sources say the deal cost millions.
The acquisition brings SafeAI’s 12-member engineering team and intellectual property into Pronto.ai’s operations.
CEO Anthony Levandowski said the move aims to enhance Pronto’s talent pool and technology in the autonomous haulage sector.
Founded in 2018, Pronto.ai develops self-driving systems for haul trucks and off-road vehicles. It also operates Pollen Mobile, a peer-to-peer mobile data network for areas with limited connectivity.
SafeAI, established in 2017, uses a multi-sensor approach and has a safety framework certified at the ASIL D level.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Consolidation signals maturation in specialized autonomous vehicle niches
The Pronto-SafeAI merger represents a significant consolidation in the off-road autonomous vehicle sector, which has fewer players than the passenger AV market.
According to Pronto CEO Anthony Levandowski, “In the autonomous haulage system space, there’s really kind of two players — it’s SafeAI and us” 1, indicating how this acquisition effectively consolidates the two primary competitors in this specialized niche.
This follows established technology market evolution where initial fragmentation gives way to consolidation as markets mature, particularly in capital-intensive sectors requiring specialized expertise.
The consolidation creates a company with complementary technological approaches, combining Pronto’s camera-only systems with SafeAI’s multi-sensor solutions that incorporate radar and lidar 2, allowing the merged entity to serve diverse customer needs from small quarries to large mines.
The deal reflects broader autonomous vehicle industry trends where companies consolidate to strengthen technological capabilities and market positions amid challenging commercialization timelines 3.
2️⃣ Specialized tech talent acquisition drives strategic M&A
The acquisition highlights how critical human capital has become in specialized technical fields where expertise is scarce.
