US antitrust agencies approve Nvidia’s $5b investment in Intel
US antitrust regulators have approved Nvidia’s planned investment in Intel, according to a notice from the Federal Trade Commission.
Nvidia said in September it would put US$5 billion into Intel, a move that could affect competitors such as Taiwan’s TSMC and US-based AMD.
The FTC notice did not provide further details about the structure or terms of the investment.
Intel has faced challenges in recent years as it competes with other chip manufacturers.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
FTC approval leaves terms unclear
- FTC clearance allows the $5.0 billion stake at $23.28 per share to proceed, with NVIDIA granted no special governance or information rights. Filings and FTC notice include no capacity commitments (reservations of manufacturing output), which would signal deal importance 1
- Intel plans to build NVIDIA-custom x86 data center CPUs and develop PC SoCs with NVIDIA RTX GPU chiplets. No timeline exists, so impact on TSMC and AMD is unclear 2
- Wedbush (an investment bank) called it a “game-changer” 2, yet 18A still serves mainly itself while yields (the share of good chips per wafer) are being worked through 3. Core Ultra series 3 lands in January, with Xeon 6+ to follow on 18A, and winning external chip designers remains the hurdle versus TSMC 3
Suppliers can time 2025 packaging bets
- New Mexico’s Fab 9 plus Fab 11x ready EMIB and Foveros 3D packaging (Intel technologies that connect/stack multiple chiplets) for volume 4. Arizona’s Fab52 targets 10,000+ 18A wafer starts weekly (a measure of fab capacity) 3. EMIB avoids interposers used in TSMC’s CoWoS (Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate) 4
- Amkor Technology is an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) provider. It teamed with Intel on EMIB assembly in Korea, Portugal, and Arizona. This drives demand for tools, materials, and OSAT services 5
- Apple plus Qualcomm posted jobs for Intel EMIB skills as TSMC faces bottlenecks with lines booked by NVIDIA and AMD. If they commit, near-term tooling and material orders could follow 4
