US AI startup MeltPlan bags $14m led by Bessemer

MeltPlan, a startup building an AI planning tool for construction, has raised US$14 million to date, including a US$10 million seed led by Bessemer Venture Partners with participation from NoaVC and WND Ventures.

The funds will be used to develop a “Planning Engine” designed to optimize preconstruction decisions.

The engine will combine systems for code compliance and cost takeoffs, as well as schedule what-if planning and value impact analysis.

MeltPlan said it is piloting the product with contractors such as DPR in California and working with Innovo Group in the UAE.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

A healthcare unicorn founder is now tackling construction

  • Bessemer’s backing makes more sense with the founders’ track records in view.
  • CEO Kanav Hasija previously co-founded Innovaccer, a healthcare technology company valued at about $3 billion 1.
  • He brings ‘systems thinking’ from healthcare data and AI infrastructure work into construction, where teams still wrestle with data silos and complex regulation 1.
  • Co-founder Tanmaya Kala adds on-the-ground construction experience as a former project executive at DPR, a contractor piloting MeltPlan’s product in California 2.

MeltPlan’s strategy moves past digitization toward decision support

  • MeltPlan frames its platform as a ‘missing layer’ that improves preconstruction choices rather than another project management suite 3.
  • Many construction tech firms focus on digital versions of existing tasks such as scheduling or bidding.
  • Through a ‘Planning Engine,’ MeltPlan wants contractors and other construction teams to test constraints and run tradeoff simulations before locking in expensive, hard-to-reverse calls 4.
  • The approach goes after a common source of cost overruns and delays since early planning mistakes often ripple through the entire build 4.
