US AI firms Runway, Luma seek billions in new funding rounds

Runway and Luma AI, startups building AI video tools, are in talks to raise major new funding rounds.

Runway is seeking around US$500 million at a valuation of at least US$5 billion, with talks involving General Atlantic and the Qatar Investment Authority.

Luma AI is targeting at least US$1.1 billion at a US$3.2 billion valuation, with discussions involving Middle Eastern investors.

Runway reported annualized revenue exceeding US$90 million by June 2024.

Luma began generating revenue after launching its AI app in November 2024, reaching an US$8 million annualized pace by December.

Both are expanding into areas like video game scene generation and robotics simulation.

They face growing competition from Google and OpenAI, which launched their own AI video models in the past year.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ AI video startups command premium valuations despite revenue challenges

The massive valuation increases for Runway and Luma reflect a broader pattern where AI companies trade at significantly higher multiples than traditional software businesses.

Runway’s proposed $5 billion valuation represents 55 times its $90 million annualized revenue, while the company lost $155 million in 2024 on just $44 million in total revenue for the year.

This disconnect illustrates what industry analysts call the “AI valuation paradox,” where traditional valuation models struggle to apply to AI companies due to their intangible assets like proprietary datasets and model architectures1.

The premium valuations persist because investors view AI technology as strategically critical, leading AI startups to command higher revenue multiples compared to traditional SaaS companies1.

This trend extends beyond video generation. AI startups overall raised $59.6 billion in Q1 2025, representing 53% of all venture funding despite being a smaller portion of total startups2.

2️⃣ Market timing drives urgent fundraising as competition intensifies
