Unitree outships US humanoid rivals as China leads hardware

Unitree shipped roughly 36x more units than US rivals Figure and Tesla last year.

According to a Forbes report, global humanoid-robot shipments totaled 13,317 last year, and the market could reach about 2.6 million units by 2035 – though Forbes noted it is unclear how many are commercial sales versus demos or pilots.

Analysts said hardware currently outpaces software; many firms rely on simulation data, and most Chinese humanoid startups use Nvidia’s Orin chips while domestic chipmakers develop alternatives.

Safety and regulation remain major hurdles. Yuli Zhao, chief strategy officer at Galbot, said early commercial adoption is likely in manufacturing, warehouse logistics, and retail where tasks are repetitive.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

China’s dominance comes from lower prices and fast build cycles

  • Unitree ships large volumes, and low pricing helps explain the scale.
  • Unitree’s G1 starts around $13,500 for the EDU (education) version, though quotes vary by seller and configuration, which makes it one of the cheapest full-featured humanoid robots available 1.
  • That pricing draws on China’s deep parts network built through the electric-vehicle (EV) sector, from sensors to batteries, plus its world’s-strongest manufacturing base that supports quicker iteration than many Western rivals 2.
  • Limits still matter. Some models run about two hours on a charge, which can curb real-world use 1.

China is setting national rules while many robots still run on Nvidia chips

  • Safety rules and regulation slow deployment, so China has moved to standardize the field.
  • In February 2026, China released its first national standard system for the full industrial chain and lifecycle of humanoid robots and embodied AI, AI systems designed to perceive and act through a physical body, covering components, brain-like and intelligent computing, applications, plus safety and ethics 3.
  • The framework targets a fast-growing home market. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said 2025 marked the first year of humanoid robot mass production, with over 140 domestic manufacturers releasing more than 330 models 3.
  • A weak spot remains dependence on U.S. tech. Many Chinese humanoid startups use Nvidia Orin chips while domestic chipmakers work on alternatives 2.
  • A separate U.S. policy update opened a case-by-case route to export some advanced AI chips, including Nvidia’s H200, to China under strict conditions rather than an automatic denial 4.
