Unicorn India backs Bioscan Research in $1m seed round

Mumbai-based Bioscan Research, a medical device startup developing non-invasive diagnostic tools, raised US$1 million in a seed round led by Unicorn India Ventures, an India-based early-stage deep-tech fund.

The company said it will use the money for market expansion, additional regulatory approvals, product upgrades, and new intellectual property.

Founded in 2017 by Anupam Lavania and Shilpa Malik, Bioscan develops devices for early brain injury detection.

It said its product, Cerebo, uses near-infrared spectroscopy and machine learning to help detect intracranial injuries in trauma patients.

The company said Cerebo was tested on 598 subjects in multicentre clinical trials and has received approvals from India’s regulator.

Bioscan has not publicly disclosed the device’s sensitivity, specificity, class, approval date, or license number.

The company also has not publicly identified deployments in hospitals or ambulances, though a usability study for Cerebo is listed on ClinicalTrials.gov.
