UK’s Isembard raises $9m to reshore manufacturing
United Kingdom-based startup Isembard has announced its intention to create a network of precision manufacturing factories in Western regions to meet reshoring demands.
The first facility commenced operations in London in January, targeting industries such as aerospace, defense, and energy.
Isembard secured £7 million (US$9 million) in a seed funding round led by Notion Capital, with participation from other investors and angel backers.
CEO Alexander Fitzgerald said that the funding will aid in Isembard’s expansion and its objective to develop faster, local, and automated production solutions.
Isembard’s approach centers on smaller, distributed manufacturing units linked by its software system, MasonOS.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Reshoring represents a major economic reversal after decades of manufacturing exodus
The current reshoring movement marks a significant shift from the massive offshoring trend that began in the late 1990s, when Chinese labor costs were dramatically lower ($3.63/hour compared to $26/hour in the U.S.)1.
This exodus decimated Western manufacturing infrastructure, leaving fragmented supply chains, outdated factories, and a loss of skilled operators, which are challenges Isembard aims to address with its new factories.
Data shows this reversal is substantial and accelerating. Reshored jobs in the U.S. increased from just 6,000 in 2010 to over 350,000 in 2022, with predictions that reshoring could reduce U.S. imports from Asia by 40% by 20302.
The combined forces of pandemic disruptions, geopolitical tensions, and changing economics, including rising foreign labor costs, have fundamentally altered the cost-benefit calculation of global manufacturing3.
Isembard’s business model specifically targets companies caught in this transition, particularly those that need precision parts but lack the capital or expertise to build their own reshored facilities.
2️⃣ Technology is the critical enabler making reshored manufacturing economically viable
The labor cost differential that originally drove manufacturing offshore cannot be overcome through patriotism alone. Advanced technology is the essential factor making reshoring economically feasible.
Isembard’s proprietary MasonOS software system reflects this reality, using modern technology to replace the “paper-based systems or software built in the 70s” that characterized traditional manufacturing.
