UK watchdog targets Apple, Google over mobile market dominance

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has proposed measures to address Apple and Google’s dominance in mobile platforms.

It plans to designate both companies as having “strategic market status,” allowing for targeted interventions.

The CMA cited concerns over inconsistent app reviews, search rankings, and up to 30% commissions on in-app purchases.

Apple and Google together control about 90% to 100% of the UK mobile platform market, which is vital to the economy.

British app developers contribute around 1.5% to the country’s GDP.

Proposed actions include more transparent app review processes, advance notice of policy changes, and better ways for developers to raise concerns. CMA chief Sarah Cardell called the measures “targeted and proportionate.”

Google said the proposals are “disappointing and unwarranted,” while Apple raised privacy and security concerns.
