UK tribunal opens Qualcomm class action lawsuit this week
A class action lawsuit against Qualcomm began this week at the UK’s Competition Appeal Tribunal, with potential compensation for about 29 million Apple and Samsung smartphone users.
The case, led by consumer group Which?, claims Qualcomm abused its market power in patent licensing and chipsets, causing higher prices or lower-quality smartphones for UK consumers.
The initial five-week phase will determine whether Qualcomm held and misused significant market power.
If successful, a later trial will assess its actions and the possible £480 million (US$646.9 million) in damages.
Which? says consumers who bought Apple or Samsung smartphones in the UK between October 1, 2015, and January 9, 2024, could get around £17 (US$22.91) per device.
