UK tribunal clears $4b iCloud lawsuit against Apple

The UK’s Competition Appeal Tribunal has approved a 3 billion pound (US$3.97 billion) collective lawsuit against Apple over its iCloud storage service.

The ruling allows consumer group Which? to represent nearly 40 million UK iCloud users who used the service between November 2018 and June 2026.

The decision means the opt-out claim can proceed as a collective action unless users choose to remove themselves from the case.

The tribunal did not rule on whether Apple is liable.

The lawsuit, filed in November 2024, alleges Apple abused a dominant position by restricting how certain files can be stored and tying iCloud to iOS devices.

It also claims Apple used prompts and system design to steer users toward iCloud and away from competing cloud-storage providers.

Apple has denied the allegations. The company said users are not required to use iCloud and remain free to choose third-party services.

The lawsuit seeks about 3 billion pounds (US$3.97 billion) in damages.

If the claim succeeds, payouts could reach as much as 77 pounds (US$100) per person. A trial is expected in 2028.
