UK AI startup Cusp in talks to raise $100m for material search
CuspAI, a British startup that develops AI models for material discovery, is in discussions to raise over US$100 million in funding, according to people familiar with the matter.
Founded in 2024, the company uses generative AI and simulations to identify materials with specific chemical properties.
CuspAI recently partnered with Finnish chemicals company Kemira Oyj, starting with a project focused on removing forever chemicals from water.
The startup previously secured US$30 million in seed funding this year.
CuspAI declined to comment on the funding talks, and the individuals sharing the information requested anonymity due to the private nature of the discussions.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ AI-driven materials discovery attracts intense competition from dozens of startups
CuspAI enters a rapidly expanding field where numerous startups are racing to apply AI to materials innovation.
A recent industry analysis identified over 20 emerging companies in materials discovery, including Altrove (founded 2024 in France), ExoMatter (2022 in Germany), and PhaseTree (2021 in Denmark), all using AI to accelerate materials development1.
This competitive landscape reflects the broader transformation happening in materials science, where AI is enabling rapid identification of new materials and synthesis pathways that previously required extensive trial-and-error research2.
Traditional material discovery involves lengthy and costly R&D processes, but generative AI models can now design molecular structures and suggest feasible synthesis pathways, significantly reducing development timelines3.
The sector’s appeal to investors stems from materials science being fundamental to addressing climate challenges, from developing better battery technologies to creating more efficient solar panels and carbon capture materials.
2️⃣ Rapid funding progression signals exceptional market confidence in materials AI
CuspAI’s potential jump from a $30 million seed round to over $100 million within the same year demonstrates unusual investor enthusiasm for AI-powered materials discovery.
This accelerated timeline is particularly notable given that CuspAI was only founded in 2024, making it less than two years old when pursuing what would likely be a Series A round4.
