UK stablecoin startup OpenTrade raises $17m

London-based OpenTrade, which provides infrastructure for stablecoin yield products, raised US$17 million in a funding round led by Mercury Fund and Notion Capital.

A16z Crypto, AlbionVC, and CMCC Global joined the round, bringing total funding to more than US$30 million.

The company said it will use the money to expand its permissioned and permissionless infrastructure.

It will add to its asset management and trading teams as it targets fintechs, exchanges, wallets, and institutional clients.

OpenTrade said it had US$5.67 million in total value locked and processed more than US$250 million in transaction volume in 2025.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

OpenTrade’s yield products combine traditional finance assets with crypto systems

  • OpenTrade gives financial technology companies tokenized “vaults” that earn yield from real-world assets (RWAs), meaning assets like bonds and credit moved onto blockchain systems, plus selected decentralized finance (DeFi) strategies 1.
  • Options run from lower-risk money market funds and US Treasuries to riskier private credit or trade finance exposures 23.
  • The lineup also includes crypto-native products, including a delta-neutral strategy that collects Solana staking rewards and SOL perpetual futures funding rates while limiting SOL price swings 45.
  • That mix lets clients choose products that fit their risk tolerance, from low single-digit returns on EUR sovereign bonds to possible double-digit returns from some DeFi or private credit strategies 62.

The company is betting financial technology firms will buy complex yield tools instead of building them

  • OpenTrade sells business-to-business (B2B) infrastructure for companies that want to offer stablecoin yield products 7.
  • Creating this setup internally is hard. It needs treasury management, counterparty risk control, and compliance across several jurisdictions, which can take months to put in place 3.
  • With one application programming interface (API) plus a platform, OpenTrade lets financial technology companies, digital banks, and crypto exchanges launch white-labeled yield products without large upfront spending or heavy ongoing operations 23.
  • That lower hurdle could help more consumer finance apps add yield products backed by RWAs as they try to compete with traditional savings accounts.
