UK reintroduces up to $4,875 grant for each EV purchase
The UK government has announced a £650 million (US$850 million) program to reintroduce grants for electric vehicle (EV) purchases.
This initiative aims to accelerate the transition to emission-free vehicles and support the struggling automotive industry.
The program offers grants of up to £3,750 (US$4,875) for new EVs priced below £37,000 (US$48,100).
More than 30 EV models are eligible for the full incentive. This is part of broader efforts to meet the government’s net zero emissions goals.
This decision by the Labour government reverses the previous Conservative administration’s 2022 move to eliminate direct grants for EV purchases.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander indicated that the grant will provide financial assistance to consumers. It will also create opportunities for the UK automotive sector.
The UK has set a target to phase out sales of new combustion-engine cars by 2030.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ EV incentives follow boom-bust cycles tied to government support
The UK’s new grant program follows a clear pattern seen in multiple EV markets where adoption rates directly respond to government incentives.
When the previous Conservative government eliminated direct EV purchase grants in 2022, the UK market experienced a significant slowdown in private buyer adoption rates1.
This mirrors similar patterns in other markets. For instance, Norway saw EV market share drop from 79% to 74% when it reduced incentives in 2023, while Germany experienced a 29% plunge in EV registrations after abruptly ending its subsidy program in December 20232.
The UK’s experience demonstrates that even mature EV markets remain highly sensitive to government support, with manufacturers often unable to reduce prices sufficiently without subsidies to maintain growth trajectories.
The timing of the new grant program also reflects political cycles, with the incoming Labour government prioritizing EV adoption as part of its broader climate agenda after years of declining sales under previous policies.
2️⃣ Used EV market instability threatens the entire electric transition
