UK regulator says Meta fails to act on illegal gambling ads

Meta Platforms Inc. is reportedly not actively monitoring or removing ads from illegal gambling sites on Facebook and Instagram, according to the UK Gambling Commission.

The regulator said Meta can identify such ads through its searchable ad library but has not taken enough action against unlicensed operators targeting UK users.

A UK official added that Meta suggested the commission use its own AI tools to detect illegal ads, raising doubts about Meta’s proactive enforcement.

The UK Gambling Commission has stepped up efforts to shut down unlicensed gambling sites that risk vulnerable consumers and evade local laws.

It said illegal ads often promote sites outside UK licensing schemes and increase fraud risks.

Meta did not respond to requests for comment, and similar concerns have been flagged in countries such as India, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia.
