UK regulator invites comment on eBay’s $1.2b Depop deal
The UK Competition and Markets Authority on June 8 launched an invitation to comment on eBay’s planned US$1.2 billion acquisition of Depop, a London-based fashion resale platform popular with younger shoppers, from Etsy.
The regulator said it had not yet started a formal investigation.
The sale, announced earlier this year, would come about five years after Etsy bought Depop for US$1.6 billion, implying a lower exit price as Etsy refocuses on its core handmade and vintage marketplace.
Depop was an early player in fashion resale, but it has faced stronger competition as Vinted expanded and attracted more sellers.
The companies overlap mainly in secondhand fashion. eBay said the category generates more than US$10 billion in annual gross merchandise volume (GMV).
Depop recorded about US$1 billion in gross merchandise sales in 2025, with 7 million active buyers and more than 3 million active sellers.
