UK-based Universal Quantum, which builds large-scale quantum computers, said on September 9 that it would make Singapore its Asia-Pacific hub and set up its first dedicated research and development presence outside Europe.

The company said the move built on its partnership with Singapore’s National Quantum Office.

It also said the move was backed by the Singapore Economic Development Board, while EDBI, an investment arm of SG Growth Capital, would become a strategic investor.

Universal Quantum works on ion-trap quantum hardware and said it was targeting systems at the million-qubit scale.

The expansion comes after Singapore announced its National Quantum Strategy in May 2024.

Under the plan, the government aims to invest about S$300 million (US$237 million) in quantum research and talent over five years.
