The UK government has ordered Apple to build a backdoor to access encrypted iCloud data for British users, according to the Financial Times.

Apple removed its Advanced Data Protection feature in the UK in February 2025 after an earlier order from authorities.

The feature offers end-to-end encryption for iCloud, ensuring data is accessible only to users on trusted devices.

Apple said UK users cannot enable the feature, and those already using it will eventually have to turn it off.

The company has appealed the order, insisting it will not create backdoors, while a UK spokesperson said such actions are taken to protect citizens.
