UK to push Apple, Google to block kids’ nude images

Britain said on June 8 it will push tech firms, including Apple and Google, to stop children from creating, sharing, or circulating nude images on phones and tablets, as governments tighten online rules on child safety and mental health.

The proposal would require tools on smartphones and tablets to detect and block nude images for children. Adults would still be able to take, share, or view such content through age verification.

A source close to the matter said a broader ban on online platforms deemed harmful for users under 16 was unlikely that week.

Australia in December became the first country to pass a nationwide social media ban for under-16s. Platforms must block those users from Dec 10, 2025, or face penalties of up to A$49.5 million (US$35.1 million).

France, Malaysia, Turkey, and several other countries are also pursuing or implementing age-based limits for online platforms.
