UK gov’t plans to monetize seized cryptocurrency worth billions
The UK government is considering the sale of seized cryptocurrency, which could generate substantial revenue for public finances.
The Home Office is developing a centralized “crypto storage and realization framework” to securely manage and sell digital assets confiscated from criminal activities.
The total value of the UK’s seized cryptocurrency is currently unknown.
However, a case from 2018 involving 61,000 Bitcoin is now estimated to be worth £5.4 billion (US$7.25 billion), increasing from its value at the time of confiscation.
The recent surge in Bitcoin’s price, reaching US$123,000, has further increased the potential revenue from sales.
Proceeds from these sales are generally divided between supporting frontline law enforcement and government accounts.
Experts suggest that these funds could significantly aid the Treasury in addressing budget challenges.
However, legal complexities, such as returning funds to victims, often slow the process.
Tender documents from BlueLight Commercial, the Home Office’s procurement body, indicate that the project may involve commissions of up to £40 million (US$52 million) for firms managing the sales.
