UK gov’t partners with Google DeepMind to boost AI research

The UK government has announced a partnership with Google DeepMind to advance AI-driven scientific research and public sector innovation.

Google DeepMind will open its first automated research lab in the UK in 2026, focusing on developing new superconductor materials and supporting broader science efforts.

The agreement will also expand collaboration with the UK’s AI Security Institute to address safe and responsible AI development.

UK scientists will receive priority access to Google DeepMind’s AI tools, including AlphaGenome and AlphaFold, for DNA sequencing and protein structure prediction.

The partnership may involve AI-enabled research in areas like fusion energy and explore new AI systems to improve public services and education.

This memorandum is voluntary, non-binding, and does not include financial commitments or guarantee future procurement.
