UK gov’t launches $13.1b AI Growth Zone plan

The UK government has announced new AI investment plans ahead of the Budget, including a new AI Growth Zone in South Wales backed by £10 billion (US$13.1 billion) in public and private funding.

The zone is expected to create at least 5,000 jobs, with companies like Vantage Data Centers and Microsoft involved.

Each AI Growth Zone will receive £5 million (US$6.5 million) in government funding to support business adoption and workforce training.

The government is also launching an advance market commitment with up to £100 million (US$130.8 million) to support UK startups building AI hardware.

A new Sovereign AI Unit, chaired by James Wise, will oversee nearly £500 million (US$654 million) of investment to help scale UK AI firms, alongside planned investments in new data centres and AI labs in London, Bristol, and other cities.
