UK may force changes to Google search in crackdown

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) may impose new restrictions on Google’s search operations due to concerns about the company’s dominant market position.

The CMA is considering giving Google a “strategic market status” under a new law that targets tech firms with significant market power.

It allows the regulator to enforce measures to limit anti-competitive practices.

This law, similar to the EU’s Digital Markets Act, gives the CMA the power to fine companies and enforce consumer protections.

Additionally, it imposes fines of up to 10% of a company’s global annual revenue for violations.

Potential rules for Google include offering alternative search options, fair search rankings, content control for publishers, and data portability.

Google raised concerns about the proposal but said it will engage with the CMA as the regulator continues its consultation.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ A decade of escalating fines reveals global regulatory strategy shift

The UK’s move is part of a systematic global shift in how regulators approach tech giants’ market power that has been building for years.

Google has faced a progression of increasingly severe penalties worldwide, from a $22.5 million FTC settlement in 2012 to record-breaking EU fines of €2.42 billion in 2017 and €4.34 billion in 2018 for anticompetitive practices 12.

These escalating penalties reflect regulators’ growing understanding that conventional antitrust remedies may be insufficient against entrenched digital gatekeepers.

The UK’s approach with the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act mirrors similar specialized digital regulatory frameworks emerging worldwide, most notably the EU’s Digital Markets Act, representing a fundamental shift from case-by-case enforcement to structural market intervention 3.

Regulators globally are increasing resources specifically for digital markets oversight, with the European Commission dedicating over 100 staff to DMA implementation and similar staffing increases in Japan and the UK 4.
