UK fintech firm Revolut secures full banking license in Mexico
Revolut has received final regulatory approval to operate as a bank in Mexico, after securing authorization from the National Banking and Securities Commission and the Bank of Mexico to launch as a multiple banking institution.
Customer deposits will be protected by the country’s deposit insurance agency, IPAB, up to about 3.4 million Mexican pesos.
The UK-based fintech said it is the first independent digital bank to complete the full licensing process in Mexico.
Revolut, which already operates in the US and Brazil, is expanding further in Latin America, seeking a banking license in Colombia and a bank acquisition in Argentina.
It plans to roll out its services in Mexico soon, starting with those on its waiting list.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Revolut’s Mexico launch scope remains undisclosed
- CNBV let Revolut operate as a Multiple Banking Institution (Institución de Banca Múltiple) 12. The approval plus the company’s updates do not list what starts on day one, so lending or U.S. dollar accounts or investment services remain unclear 12.
- Since 2015, the company went from currency exchange to accounts and international payments 2. It later added crypto, stocks, insurance, plus loans within a decade 2. For Mexico, the starting lineup is still undisclosed, so past rollouts hint that more products could arrive after launch 12.
- IPAB, Mexico’s deposit insurance agency, covers deposits up to about 3.4 million pesos 12.
Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and marketplace teams should track Revolut’s API in Mexico
- Revolut’s Business API can automate payments, virtual card issuance, or currency exchange 34. It also provides endpoints for vendor payouts plus virtual card creation, though availability and integrations vary by plan and country 34. If Business accounts launch in Mexico with CLABE (Mexico’s standard 18-digit bank account number for domestic transfers) or SPEI (Mexico’s real-time interbank payments system), tech platforms that run payroll, freelancer payouts, or supplier settlements could use it for local disbursements.
- The API is available on Grow plans and above 35. Grow is a paid tier for businesses 35. It supports flexible payment acceptance such as Revolut Pay, its online checkout 35. FX, fees, or limits depend on plan and usage 35.
- Watch the company’s product pages plus developer docs for Business account availability in Mexico and any SPEI integration timelines 35. Early adopters could get an advantage by embedding Revolut for payouts.
