🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Revolut’s record profits were earned amid prolonged UK licensing scrutiny
- Revolut posted record 2025 results while it worked through a long regulatory review in the United Kingdom 1, 2.
- Until March 2026, the firm stayed in a restricted “mobilisation” phase (an interim period before a new bank can fully operate) while UK regulators assessed whether its risk controls could keep up with fast international expansion 1, 3.
- The wait ran past the usual 12-month mobilisation period and limited its UK banking unit, including a £50,000 cap on total deposits 1, 4.
- In March 2026, Revolut won a full UK banking license and filed for a US national bank charter 5.
Revolut’s path sets a new roadmap for global fintechs
- Revolut’s experience suggests fintechs chasing global scale face tighter expectations on governance, not just growth.
- Its CEO said the company once leaned on lighter regulatory categories, including e-money and payment licenses, as a “short-cut” that led to a “worse product” 3.
- Approval from a major regulator such as the UK’s can serve as a “signal of confidence” that shapes decisions in other markets, which can make deep compliance in one market more valuable than thin approvals across many 1.
- The result sets a higher bar for the industry, where sustained profitability plus proven regulatory maturity may matter more than user growth when judging success 5.
