UK crypto trading startup Variational lands $50m series A

On May 21, Variational, an on-chain derivatives trading protocol, said it raised about US$50 million in a series A round led by Dragonfly.

The company also launched perpetual contracts tied to commodities as it expands into real-world assets.

Other investors included Bain Capital Crypto, Coinbase Ventures, and Peak XV Partners.

The first markets cover gold, silver, copper, and WTI crude.

Variational said it aggregates liquidity from crypto venues and traditional markets instead of building separate order books for each asset.

The company said that since opening an invite-only beta in January 2025.

The platform has handled more than US$200 billion in trading volume across over 50,000 accounts and reached more than US$750 million in open interest.

It plans to add equities, foreign exchange, and indices.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Variational’s zero-fee trading runs through its own market maker

  • Variational does not run separate order books. It uses a request-for-quote (RFQ) system, where traders ask for prices directly instead of matching through a public order book 1.
  • On Omni, one internal unit called the Omni Liquidity Provider (OLP) is the sole market maker and the counterparty to user trades 2.
  • This setup lets Variational offer zero-fee trading. The platform makes money from the bid-ask spread, the gap between buy and sell prices that market makers usually keep 3.
  • The OLP offsets risk on external crypto venues such as Binance and Bybit. It aims to earn the difference between the spread charged on Omni and its lower institutional hedging costs 3.

The on-chain brokerage model pushes against order-book-first design

  • Variational is challenging the central limit order book (CLOB) model used by many decentralized exchanges. It is betting that CLOBs do not scale well when real-world asset liquidity is split across many venues 4.
  • By tapping existing traditional and crypto markets, Variational tries to avoid the “cold start” problem, the challenge of getting enough early trading in each new asset. That hurdle has slowed exchanges that want to list hundreds of markets 5.
  • If the approach works, it could shape trading beyond the largest cryptocurrencies and push other exchanges toward similar hybrid designs 5.
  • The model uses blockchain mainly for settlement, the final recording and completion of trades, while leaning on liquidity that already exists in traditional finance 5.
