UK chipmaker Alphawave delays forecast due to US tariffs

British semiconductor firm Alphawave IP Group announced on April 17, 2025 that it cannot provide a financial forecast for 2025 and beyond.

The company cited uncertainties related to United States tariffs as the reason for withholding its projections.

Alphawave specializes in designing and licensing chip technology for data centers, networking, and storage.

The company reported a 34% increase in new bookings, totaling US$515.5 million for fiscal 2024.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Semiconductor growth forecasts clash with geopolitical uncertainties

Alphawave’s inability to provide 2025 forecasts due to tariff concerns contrasts with the industry’s broader growth projections.

Multiple industry analyses predict record semiconductor sales of $697 billion in 2025, representing continued growth after 2024’s strong $630.5 billion performance 1.

This situation highlights how geopolitical factors are creating company-specific challenges despite overall industry optimism, with 92% of semiconductor executives in a recent KPMG survey expecting revenue growth in 2025 2.

The Semiconductor Industry Association has advocated for market-opening trade policies because the U.S. semiconductor industry has maintained a trade surplus for approximately 30 years, making it particularly vulnerable to trade disruptions 3.

Historic data shows semiconductor sales grew 19.1% in 2024, with particularly strong performance in the Americas (44.8% growth) and China (18.3%), demonstrating the global interconnectedness that makes the industry sensitive to international trade tensions 1.

2️⃣ Strategic acquisitions accelerate amid regulatory uncertainties

Qualcomm’s interest in acquiring Alphawave reflects a broader industry consolidation trend as companies navigate an uncertain regulatory landscape.

Recent years have seen major semiconductor acquisitions reshape the industry, including AMD’s $49 billion purchase of Xilinx and Infineon’s $10 billion acquisition of Cypress Semiconductor, as companies seek to strengthen their technological capabilities and market positions 4.

The semiconductor industry’s cyclical nature, demonstrated by its historical patterns of growth and contraction, makes strategic acquisitions particularly valuable during periods of regulatory uncertainty, as they can provide diversification and reduce exposure to market-specific risks 5.
