UK authors push for action against Meta over AI copyright use

A group of authors, including Richard Osman and Kazuo Ishiguro, has urged the UK government to hold Meta accountable for allegedly using copyrighted books to train its AI models.

The Society of Authors organized an open letter, published as a petition on Change.org, calling on Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy to summon Meta executives for questioning.

The authors claim Meta used works from LibGen, a “shadow library” with over 7.5 million books, without permission.

Meta denied the claims, asserting that its AI models rely on the fair use of copyrighted material.
