UK AI startup Phoebe secures $17m seed for real-time software fixes

Phoebe, a UK-based AI startup focused on software monitoring and error detection, has raised US$17 million in seed funding led by GV (formerly Google Ventures) and Cherry Ventures.

The round, one of the largest seed deals for a UK startup in 2025, was announced alongside the public launch of Phoebe’s platform.

Founded in 2024 by Matt Henderson and James Summerfield, former executives at Stripe Europe, Phoebe uses AI agents to monitor live system data and address software glitches in real time.

The company said its technology can reduce the time to resolve software errors by up to 90%, and cited industry data that global losses from software outages reached US$400 billion last year.

Early customers include Trainline, a UK-based rail booking app.

Phoebe’s founders previously sold their first startup, Rangespan, to Google in 2014.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ AI monitoring represents the latest evolution in a 30-year progression from reactive to proactive systems

Phoebe’s “immune system” approach reflects how monitoring tools have fundamentally transformed from basic reactive alerts to intelligent, predictive systems.

The journey began with simple Unix commands like top and vmstat in the early 1990s, evolved through network monitoring tools like Nagios in the 2000s, and now reaches AI-powered solutions that can proactively identify and fix problems before they impact users 1.

This progression mirrors how monitoring shifted from hardware-focused metrics to software performance analytics as cloud computing emerged, requiring tools that could handle vast amounts of data and provide actionable insights rather than just raw information 1.

Phoebe’s claim of reducing resolution time by 90% represents a significant improvement from traditional monitoring that required human interpretation to AI systems that can both diagnose and remediate issues autonomously.

2️⃣ Massive downtime costs justify premium valuations for AI monitoring startups

The financial stakes behind software reliability explain why Google Ventures led Phoebe’s $17 million seed round despite the company being barely a year old.

A Gartner study found that the average network outage costs companies $72,000 per hour, while Phoebe’s data suggests global software outages reached $400 billion in losses last year 2.
