UK AI startup Incident.io bags $62m series B

London-based startup Incident.io has raised US$62 million in a series B funding round led by Insight Partners, with participation from existing investors Index and Point Nine.

This funding increases the company’s total raised to over US$96 million since its founding in 2021.

The new funding will be allocated to expanding hiring, sales, and marketing efforts in London and San Francisco.

Incident.io provides an AI-based platform designed to improve incident management and response for IT systems.

The platform caters to organizations with over 200 users and has managed approximately 250,000 incidents since its inception. Notable clients include Netflix, Etsy, and Ramp, with a significant portion of new customers coming from the US.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Digital incident management inherits a 50-year evolution from wildfire response

Modern platforms like Incident.io are building on incident management principles first developed in the 1970s following devastating Southern California wildfires that caused 16 deaths and $234 million in damages 1.

The original Incident Command System (ICS) was created by FIRESCOPE to provide uniform terminology and procedures for coordinating multiple agencies during crisis response, with Congress allocating $900,000 to develop this framework 1.

What began as a wildland fire management tool gradually evolved into an all-hazard incident management system, with the first non-fire application occurring during the Occidental Tower high-rise fire in Los Angeles in 1976 2.

This historical progression highlights Incident.io’s own evolution, starting with a focus on technical reliability for engineering teams and expanding to security incidents and broader organizational response. This demonstrates how incident management often expands beyond its initial use cases.

The system’s versatility explains why Incident.io is seeing adoption beyond its core technical user base, following the same pattern as the original ICS, which became a national standard across various emergency sectors.

2️⃣ Financial impact of downtime drives investment in incident management

Major service disruptions carry staggering costs that justify substantial investment in incident management platforms. For example, a 12-hour App Store outage in 2015 cost Apple approximately $25 million, while a 14-hour Facebook outage in 2019 resulted in an estimated $90 million loss 3.

Beyond direct revenue impacts, major incidents like the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack in 2021 demonstrate how service disruptions can have far-reaching consequences across entire industries and regions 3.
