UK agritech firm RootWave raises $15m to replace herbicides

RootWave, a UK-based company specializing in electrical weed control, has raised US$15 million in funding.

This funding will support the expansion of its chemical-free solution for managing weeds, including those resistant to herbicides.

The funding round was led by Clay Capital and included participation from the Agri Investment Fund, Xinomavro Ventures, Naruhisa Nakagawa of Caygan Capital, Jorge Heraud, and existing investors such as V-Bio Ventures, Rabo Ventures, and PYMWYMIC.

The company intends to use the funds to accelerate its regional and international expansion.

RootWave has established commercial sales in the UK and formed partnerships with manufacturers like Garford Farm Machinery to distribute its technology across Europe.

RootWave plans to expand into the US market in the future.

RootWave’s technology uses high-frequency electricity to eliminate weeds without chemical herbicides. The company claims to achieve up to a 99% weed kill rate in single-pass field trials.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Herbicide resistance has created a market opportunity for alternative technologies

The rising number of herbicide-resistant weeds has created a significant market gap that RootWave is addressing with its electrical solution.

The first cases of herbicide resistance appeared in the 1950s and 1960s, with field bindweed showing resistance to 2,4-D in Kansas by 1964 1.

Since the 1980s, resistance has accelerated dramatically, with over 65 weed species in the U.S. now resistant to one or more of 25 herbicide families 1.

Glyphosate (Roundup) resistance has been particularly problematic. Despite initially being considered low-risk for resistance development, widespread use in Roundup Ready crops has led to at least 34 glyphosate-resistant weed species emerging globally 2.

This resistance pattern creates an escalating cycle where farmers need increasingly powerful or complex chemical solutions, opening the door for innovative non-chemical approaches like RootWave’s electrical technology.

2️⃣ Regulatory and environmental pressures are reshaping weed management practices
