UBTech offers $18m pay for AI scientist

UBTech Robotics, a Shenzhen-based humanoid robot maker, is recruiting a chief scientist with annual pay of up to 124 million yuan (US$18 million) as it seeks to expand research on AI for robots.

The role will oversee the company’s humanoid robot and “embodied intelligence” strategy, including development of AI models and research direction.

The package stands out in China’s AI sector, where compensation has typically lagged behind global peers despite growing investment in robotics.

UBTech, China’s first listed humanoid robot maker, said its sales rose more than 50% last year, and it has secured commercial deployments including with Airbus.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

### The growth was driven by a 2,203.7% jump in revenue from full-size humanoid robots

  • UBTech’s biggest lift came from full-size embodied intelligent humanoid robots plus related services. Revenue rose 2,203.7% year on year to RMB 821 million 1.
  • This line moved from 2.7% of total revenue in 2024 to 41.1% in 2025, which made it the top income source 2.
  • Shipments hit 1,079 full-size humanoid robots in 2025, up from three units in 2024 3.
  • The gain followed the scale-up, mass production, and delivery of the Walker S series 2. It supported material handling, sorting, and quality inspection in automotive and 3C electronics manufacturing (a common shorthand in Asia for the computer, communications, and consumer electronics sectors) 2.

### UBTech’s high-stakes offer signals a ‘top brain’ arms race in robotics

  • UBTech’s recruitment push fits a wider contest for elite academic talent to lead embodied AI development 4.
  • Geekplus-W (a robotics company) appointed Dr. Zhao Hao (an assistant professor affiliated with Tsinghua University’s Institute for AI Industry Research) as chief scientist of its embodied intelligence subsidiary in February 4.
  • The role aims to bring world models (AI systems that simulate how the physical world works) into industrial uses 4.
  • Investors track these hires as a signal of long-term prospects, while labor costs rise across the sector 5.
