Ubisoft posts record $1.7b net loss

Ubisoft reported a record net loss of 1.5 billion euros (US$1.73 billion) for the year ended March 31.

The French video game maker said restructuring, game delays, and seven project cancellations weighed on performance.

Net bookings fell 17.4% to just over 1.5 billion euros (US$1.74 billion) for the year and dropped 54% to 415 million euros (US$481 million) in the fourth quarter.

The company is grouping half its studios into five creative houses and seeking 200 million euros (US$232 million) in annual savings over two years after earlier cuts of 300 million euros (US$348 million).

Ubisoft cut about 1,200 jobs over the past year to about 16,700 staff.

It said 2026-27 would likely be a low point with a high single-digit drop in net bookings.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Tencent cash softened Ubisoft’s record loss

  • Ubisoft recently took in 1.2 billion euros (US$1.35 billion) from Tencent, which softened the blow of its reported loss 1.
  • Tencent got a 26.32% economic stake in Ubisoft subsidiary Vantage Studios, which centers on Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 1.
  • The money gave Ubisoft needed breathing room as it faced a possible credit downgrade and carried 1.2 billion euros (US$1.33 billion) in net debt before the transaction 2, 3.
  • Rainbow Six Siege had monthly active users well above 10 million in March, and the Assassin’s Creed franchise ended the year with more than 30 million unique active players, said Ubisoft 4.

Ubisoft’s deal could spread across gaming

  • The restructuring uses an intellectual property (IP) carve-out model. A publisher sells a minority stake in a unit built around top franchises while keeping overall control 3, 1.
  • For Tencent, the setup adds exposure to premium Western console series, where its portfolio has been weaker, and avoids the integration problems of a full takeover 3.
  • A five-year equity lock-up for Tencent ties the arrangement to a longer partnership instead of a short-term rescue 5.
  • Other large publishers under financial strain but sitting on valuable series may view this as a workable way to raise cash and bring in help from investors like Tencent 3.
