Uber has started offering fully driverless robotaxi rides in Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island, using vehicles developed by Chinese autonomous driving firm WeRide.

The robotaxis are available to users who request UberX or Uber Comfort within the 12-square-mile tourist area.

Uber and WeRide began piloting the service with safety drivers in December 2024, and have now removed them for select routes.

WeRide’s GXR vans, equipped with over 20 sensors and cameras and seating up to five passengers, power the service.

Uber manages fleet operations in partnership with local taxi operator Tawasul Transport, while WeRide handles vehicle testing and sensor calibration.

The companies said they plan to expand the service area in the future, and are considering launches in up to 15 more cities globally.
